  1. SUBJECTS OF ONE YEAR DIPLOMA IN LIBRARY

    ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATION:
    a) Library and Society: Introduction to Libraries, Historical development of
    libraries in India. Types of libraries- Public libraries, Academic Libraries, Special
    libraries, Virtual libraries and Digital Libraries. Levels of Public libraries- National,
    State Centre, State, District, Tehsil, Village or Community Centre and Tribal
    Libraries. Levels of Academic Libraries- University, College and School libraries.
    National library of India and World. Dr. S. R Ranganathan\u2019s Five Laws of library
    Science. Library legislation- Need, Public library acts in India, Intellectual
    Property Rights act. Library associations in India and world – ILA, IASLIC, IATLIS,
    IFLA, ALA. National and International Library Networks- DELNET, INFLIBNET,

    involved in classification process. Library classification- Meaning, definitions,
    Need, Purpose and Functions of library classification. Library classification
    schemes- Colon classification, Dewey decimal classification, Universal Decimal
    Classification and Library of Congress classification scheme. Types (species) of
    library classification schemes viz Purely Enumerative classification, Almost
    Enumerative classification, A most freely Faceted, rigidly faceted classification,
    freely faceted classification, Analytico-Synthetic Classification. Library
    Classification tools for CC & DDC.
    c) Colon Classification Scheme- Introduction, Origin and development of
    Colon Classification scheme, Editions of colon classification scheme and their
    Parts. Concept of categories, Historical development of categories, Main Classes,
    Canons of colon classification, Key Principles of Colon Classification.
